Origin Maths Hub are implementing the ‘Mastering Number in Reception and Key Stage 1’ Programme as part of our drive to promote equity and inclusion through the values and pedagogy of high-quality mathematics teaching (teaching mathematics for mastery).

By taking part in the programme, your school will be provided with planning and resources to deliver sessions with classes of children, to support all children to thrive, enjoy and achieve in mathematics (no matter their background, circumstances, prior attainment or educational needs).

Planning and resources are provided alongside free professional development that enables teachers to use the materials in line with the EEF’s  ‘5 a day principles’ based on their guidance report, ‘Special Educational Needs in Mainstream Schools‘.

Key strategies to engineer success for all children are woven expertly into the design of the programme, such as:

  • Considering the cognitive load on children

  • Building understanding of concepts up in small steps

  • Providing instruction and modelling that makes explicit the implicit concepts and structures in mathematics

  • use of cognitive strategies such as physical gestures and representations to support learning

  • a strong focus on disciplinary literacy (the specific ways of reading, writing, and thinking used in mathematics), vocabulary, and focused talk

  • The strategies ensure that all children build self-confidence in their ability to do mathematics, can keep up in whole-class teaching, have the opportunity to explore concepts in depth, and are given sufficient time to build understanding in foundational number skills.
