Mastering Number: Supporting pupils to develop good number sense
This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2.
The aim over time is that children will leave Key Stage 1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.
Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through Key Stage 1 to support success in the future.
Lead teacher participants will receive training and resources equipping them to give their class a daily short ‘number sense’ session as part of scheduled maths teaching. The programme will last for the whole school year.
Over the year, children will use a range of materials and representations.
Benefits
High quality support for teacher professional development for the lead teachers, directed by the NCETM and facilitated by the local Maths Hub
Supportive and collaborative online community facilitated by the Work Group Lead
Resources provided, including coherent plans for the Mastering Number daily sessions
I can’t sing its praises enough, children who struggle with maths are now much more able to articulate what they are doing and what they don’t understand.
Mastering Number Participant 2023
The programme is having a big impact in our classroom. Children who don’t speak up at all in ‘regular’ maths lessons have the confidence to speak up and answer questions/use stem sentences. This is having an impact on their confidence in maths.
Mastering Number Participant 2021 -2022
Our biggest success is how it is supporting SEND children. The rekenreks are really impactful and the daily fluency practice is really supporting them. The children are building confidence and using fingers less and using what they know to calculate.
