Mastering Number: A New Programme for Early Primary Pupils
This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2.
The aim over time is that children will leave Key Stage 1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number.
Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through Key Stage 1 to support success in the future.
Lead teacher participants will receive training and resources equipping them to give their class a daily short ‘number sense’ session as part of scheduled maths teaching. The programme will last for the whole school year.
Over the year, children will use a range of materials and representations, including a small abacus-like piece of equipment called a rekenrek. These will be provided for schools.
