Bespoke, fully funded support for primary and secondary schools to develop the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Research by the Maths Hubs Programme, shows evidence that there are some schools that do not have the capacity to benefit from standard Teaching for Mastery Programmes and that Maths Hubs need to provide additional, bespoke support for schools.

Targeted Support in Maths supports Primary & Secondary schools through one of two ways; Enhanced Support and Intensive Support.

Enhanced Support

Enhanced Support delivers customised support to the school to address specific barriers to implementation of the standard Teaching for Mastery programme. This support is provided alongside current Maths Hub activity to ensure the engagement in TfM work groups has the greatest impact.

Schools work closely with a Local Leader of Maths Education (LLME) to feel confident in the implementation of principles of Teaching for Mastery and address particular challenges faced by the school.

Schools will, typically, receive between one and three visits from their LLME, over an agreed period of time, to focus on the priorities agreed with school leaders.

Intensive Support

Intensive Support is for schools not currently engaged in a Teaching for Mastery programme with the Maths Hub. A school may never have participated in a programme or may have paused participation in a Teaching for Mastery work group and need support to re-join the programme.

Participating schools will benefit from the intensive, sustained support of a Maths Hub Intensive Support Partner (ISP) who will collaborate to build capacity within the school which fosters a supportive culture and good foundation for implementing improvements in the teaching and learning of maths.

This is achieved through the ISP and the school working in partnership to explore, plan, deliver and sustain the implementation of a specific, bespoke improvement plan, based on a chosen focus within the school’s priorities.

The number of days of ISP time and related release grant funding will be tailored to the needs of this bespoke work.

What are the intended outcomes?

The ISP will work with school and subject leaders to:

  • gain leaders’ commitment to the underpinning principles of the Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery
  • clarify the school’s vision for maths and accurately describe how the current position relates to this
  • construct a mutually agreed short- and medium-term implementation plan for maths which enables the school to move towards realising its vision
  • support development of current and future capacity within the school to implement and review the implementation plan
  • develop a stronger relationship between the school and the Maths Hub
  • ensure Intensive Support leads to an improved position for the school to benefit from the Maths Hub’s standard Teaching for Mastery offer
  • begin to promote a culture of collaborative professionalism in order to identify and make improvements to the teaching and learning of maths.

Through this support, leaders will become confident in assessing and reviewing the culture, systems and practices supporting maths in their school. They will also more confidently explore future priorities for improvement in maths and plan development cycles for maths teaching and learning.

Teachers will demonstrate developed practice in a focused area linked to an initial bespoke development cycle.

What is the cost?

Enhanced support is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.

To further support engagement with intensive work, there is a £200 per day grant available to fund release time and deliver the improvement work designed to fit their context.

Who can take part?

Schools who receive Enhanced Support are already working with Origin on a Teaching for Mastery programme.

Schools that are offered Intensive Support are not currently engaged with Origin and do not have the capacity to benefit from a standard Teaching for Mastery programme without some initial support. These schools need to be committed to making long-term improvements in maths and to work closely with the Maths Hub over a number of years.
