Primary Teaching for Mastery Work Groups
Collaborative professional development for schools to ensure that a teaching maths for mastery approach is implemented with fidelity
Previously known as ‘Embedding’ and ‘Sustaining’, this programme is for primary schools that have previously taken part in a Teaching for Mastery Work Group. Taking part enables schools to continue to enhance, deepen and embed their approach to leading and teaching maths. Over 240 schools in Solihull, Coventry and Warwickshire are currently taking part in Teaching for Mastery Work Groups.
Each school will continue working with a small group of local schools, supported by a Mastery Specialist. Across the year, maths subject leaders (and other teachers from the school) will have the opportunity to collaborate to explore effective maths leadership, observe live teaching for mastery, implement aspects such as lesson design, and refine systems to maximise pupil impact.
Participants will work closely with their senior leaders to focus on key areas of curriculum development and professional learning. There will also be opportunities to explore implementation strategies focused on particular aspects such as oracy and mixed-age.
Benefits of joining a Primary Teaching for Mastery Work Group
- You will develop a consistent whole-school approach to teaching for mastery.
- You will support pupils to meet age-related expectations and develop a deeper understanding of key mathematical ideas.
- You will collaborate with other schools to share practice and refine approaches.
- You will strengthen teaching and subject leadership across your school, including sustainable professional development.
- There is no cost for this school and professional development and as many teachers as you like from your school can take part. The Work Groups are fully funded by the Maths Hub Programme, so are free to participating schools.
What is involved?
We are still refining our plans for 25/26, working with schools currently involved to ensure that we provide the best possible provision and opportunities.
Our plans will include:
- Maths subject leaders’ network and development sessions (approximately 3 days across the year)
- Support with implementing and embedding Mastering Number at Reception and KS1
- Collaborative lesson observation and planning workshops for any teacher in reception and years 1 to 6
- Support for those schools who are using the NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation as their main planning tool or to support another scheme.
- Support for schools who are teaching mixed age maths lessons.
“ The school has developed so much in the last few years with its approach to teaching maths for mastery, this is directly as a result of working with the Maths Hub. There is no other provision as fantastic for any other curriculum areas. The range of support means there is always something on offer for whatever you are looking for. The Maths Hub also is always in tune with the relevant demands or challenges school are facing and they always make sure this is interwoven into all the support they offer from SEND to Disadvantaged to Oracy – all being key challenges facing schools and are all being addressed constantly through the Maths Hub work. The provision they offer is always high quality by serving teachers, who understand being in the classroom and the challenges this faces. As a direct results of working with the Maths Hub, all staff have increased their subject knowledge, TAs have increased their subject knowledge, there is a uniformed approach to teaching for mastery across the school and staff understand the pedagogy behind it. Our pupils are retaining mathematical knowledge and as a result there is little reteaching having to happen, as secure foundations are being passed up year on year.”
School Maths Lead and member of a Teaching for Mastery Work Group 2025
The involvement within Teaching for Mastery work groups ensures regular networking with fellow Maths leads to keep up to date with key trends and resources. Maths is one of the stronger subjects within our school because the staff enjoy teaching it, through using the clear resources and guidance from Maths Hub projects (including Mastering Number).
